Talking Teens: Evaluation of national data 2018

The 4-session Talking Teens programme, developed alongside Dr John Coleman, aims to increase parents’ understanding of teenagers’ feelings and behaviour, and deliver key strategies for maintaining and improving relationships.

The data analysed in this report was collected from 12 Talking Teens groups that ran between 2017 and 2018.

The impact of the programme was assessed using three questionnaires in a pre/post design, and parents were asked to give qualitative feedback about their experiences of the programme via questionnaires and a focus group.

The results showed a statistically significant improvement in all measures following attendance at the programme, with significant improvements showing in parenting self-efficacy and aspects of family life.

Feedback from parents via questionnaires and the focus group showed that parents felt that they had benefitted from the programme. They reported improvements across a range of outcomes, including improved understanding of their teenager, increased repertoire of parenting strategies and reassurance that other parents were having similar experiences.
